The Fukushima nuclear-contaminated wastewater release recently aroused significant concerns about seafood safety. According to a spokesman of Huangsha Aquatic Products Market, one of the largest fresh aquatic products wholesale markets in Guangzhou, no imported aquatic products from Japan are on sale.
"We had imported scallops from Japan a few years ago. However, when we were informed by other markets that some scallop-made sauce products were nuclear polluted, we stopped importing any aquatic and sauce products from Japan. You can only purchase local scallop-made sauce products in this market," he said.
The spokesman also introduced that the best sellers in this market are salmon, tuna, and scallops. All of these seafood are imported from America and Australia. A small amount of them are locally produced. "Seafood imported from Japan is too expensive, and local seafood has better quality and cheaper price. Therefore, people in Guangzhou prefer buying local seafood."
The most eye-catching seafood in the market, Boston Lobster, is imported from North America. Another popular seafood, King Crab, comes from Russia. "The price of seafood has stayed stable recently, and has even reduced a little bit as the summer fishing ban has been lifted," the spokesman said, "The public does not have to worry too much about the seafood safety because our seafood has been tested before selling on the market by market regulation departments."
